From Catfish Ponds to Community Care: The Rigdon Family’s Journey with First South
At First South Farm Credit, we’re proud to support members who not only grow their own dreams but also invest in the well-being of their communities. Daryl and Holly Rigdon are a shining example of that character. Longtime members of First South, the Rigdons have built a legacy with agriculture and healthcare—starting with a single catfish pond and growing into a thriving rural medical clinic and pharmacy.
Daryl Rigdon’s journey began with one catfish pond and a lot of determination. While still working a full-time job, he built his first pond and wired the electrical systems himself. Over time, he expanded his operation, eventually purchasing a farm in Pickens County, Alabama. As a first-generation farmer, Daryl faced his share of challenges, but his perseverance laid the foundation for a multi-generational legacy—his son Cody now farms as well, and the next generation is already showing interest.
The Rigdons’ commitment to their community didn’t stop at agriculture. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Daryl and Holly took a bold step: they built the First Choice Family Medical clinic to serve their neighbors. Despite the red tape and uncertainty of the times, they opened the clinic in June 2021. Just four years later, they celebrated the grand opening of their newest venture— First Choice Pharmacy, also financed by First South.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was a powerful moment for the Rigdons. “It was emotional,” Daryl shared. “We’re just thankful everything came together.” The turnout from the community was overwhelming, a testament to the impact the Rigdons have made.
Throughout their journey, First South Farm Credit has been a trusted partner. From financing their catfish operation to supporting the launch of their medical businesses, the Rigdons have relied on the Tuscaloosa office—especially Miller Bonds and Joseph Reed—for guidance and support.
“I’ve had the pleasure of working with Holly and Daryl Rigdon since 2017, when I was just beginning my career with FSFC,” said Bonds. “They took a chance on a young kid in lending, and I’ll never forget that. Even after I relocated from Tuscaloosa, they stayed in touch—checking in on my journey and offering encouragement. It’s been incredibly rewarding to watch the continued success of their clinic, pharmacy, catfish operation, and all their other ventures.”
Daryl echoed Bond’s sentiments on the partnership with First South and their family
“They helped me through some good times and bad times,” Daryl said. “I’ve banked with others before, but I’ve had a great relationship with y’all.”
When asked what drives them, Daryl answer was simple: “Serving the community and helping people—that’s what we do.” In a rural area where access to care often means traveling to Starkville or beyond, the Rigdons’ clinic and pharmacy are making a real difference.
At First South, we’re honored to be part of their story—and proud to support members like the Rigdon family who turn hard work into lasting impact.
